Overview
Bayt al-Suhaymi is one of the finest surviving examples of Ottoman-era domestic architecture in Cairo. It sits in the narrow alley of Darb al-Asfar, just off Al-Muizz Street in the Gamaliya district of Islamic Cairo. From the street it looks modest, but inside it reveals how well-off Cairene families once lived. The house is named after the Suhaymi family, who owned it and enlarged it, and it is now preserved as a historic house open to visitors.
The oldest part of the house dates to 1648, when it was built by Abd al-Wahhab al-Tablawi. A major extension followed in 1796, when the complex was expanded and brought to roughly the form seen today. Over generations it grew by absorbing neighbouring spaces. The result is a layered, almost maze-like building of courtyards, halls and rooms on several levels, which shows how Cairene houses evolved to suit changing family needs.
The design follows a traditional inward-looking plan. Rooms gather around an open courtyard that brings in light and air, while the outer walls offer privacy from the busy lane. Inside, visitors find reception halls with decorated wooden ceilings, intricate mashrabiya screens and quiet corners meant for family life. Restoration work in recent decades helped conserve the house, making it a rewarding stop for anyone interested in Cairo's urban and domestic heritage.
