Overview

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), known in Arabic as المتحف المصري الكبير, stands on the edge of the Giza Plateau, roughly two kilometres from the Pyramids of Giza. Conceived as Egypt's flagship institution for its ancient heritage, it is widely described as the largest archaeological museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization. Its collections trace Egyptian history from prehistory through the pharaonic, Greek and Roman periods, gathering tens of thousands of objects from sites across the country.

The building was designed by Heneghan Peng Architects of Dublin, following an international design competition in the early 2000s. Its vast, gently angled façade of translucent, alabaster-toned stone is shaped to relate to the geometry and alignment of the nearby pyramids, linking the modern structure to the ancient landscape. Construction continued for many years, with phased openings, and the museum was officially inaugurated in November 2025 as one of Egypt's most ambitious cultural projects.

Inside, visitors enter a monumental atrium dominated by a colossal statue of Ramesses II, then climb the Grand Staircase lined with royal statues and monuments. The museum is especially celebrated for displaying the burial treasures of Tutankhamun together in one setting for the first time. Beyond the galleries, it houses a major conservation centre and associated research facilities, making it both a public showcase and a working centre for the care of Egypt's antiquities.

Visitor tips

  • Check the museum's official channels for current opening hours, ticket types and prices before you go, as these can change.
  • Allow several hours for your visit and wear comfortable shoes, since the galleries and staircase cover a very large area.
  • The museum sits near the Giza pyramids but is a separate site, so plan transport and tickets for each rather than assuming a combined visit.
