Overview

Malawy Museum is a regional antiquities museum in the city of Mallawi, in Egypt's Minya Governorate, in Middle Egypt. It was created in the twentieth century to display finds from excavations in the surrounding region, once the heartland of the ancient cult of Thoth, god of writing and wisdom. For visitors, it offers a focused look at provincial Egypt, far from the crowds of Cairo and Luxor, and it helps explain how local discoveries connect to the wider story of the Nile Valley.

The collection draws mainly on sites near Mallawi, above all Hermopolis Magna (modern el-Ashmunein), the necropolis of Tuna el-Gebel, and the Amarna area associated with Akhenaten. Objects range from the Pharaonic era through the Greco-Roman period and include statues, coffins, stelae, pottery and small funerary items. Tuna el-Gebel is especially famed for its galleries of mummified ibises and baboons, animals sacred to Thoth, which give the region a distinctive place in Egyptian religious history.

In August 2013 the museum was looted during a period of unrest, and a large share of its collection was taken, a loss that drew international concern. Over the following years many pieces were recovered by Egyptian authorities, and the building was restored and reopened to the public. Today the museum stands as both a showcase of Middle Egyptian heritage and a reminder of how important it is to protect cultural property for future generations.
